Hi Guys,

Im looking at setting up a Vmware home lab on a Laptop because of my work which is very mobile. Im looking to study for the VCP exam so would need a Laptop with a few peripherals - ( external portable drive as a SAN?)to enable me just switch on at a hotel and study away.

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Thanks
Phil

Hi Phil,

You\'ll need 2 computers. One for ESXi and the other running Windows with the vSphere client.

I did this a few moths ago. I Installed ESXi 4.1 to a USB key and used an external 2.5\" USB HDD as a datastore.
That\'s the easiest setup with a laptop. Just plug in the USB key when you want VM and remove when booting normally.
------------------------------

If you\'re short on computers, to run ESXi, you could carry around a tiny case with a mini-itx board and internal 2.5\" HDD. Have a look at http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=54 for a tiny case. You can cross reference mini-itx motherboards with various compatibility lists.

If you wanted iSCSI experience, you can load FreeNAS or OpenFiler as a VM, store it locally and assign it a large HDD. Then, within FN/OF you can setup an iSCSI target and direct vSphere to it.

All you need is Case, Mobo, RAM and HDD.

Approx costs:
Case: $60 (M350)
Mobo: $100 (Intel D525)
RAM: $40 (4GB Kingston)
HDD: $100 (250GB Samsung maybe?)
Total: $300

Not bad at all for a mobile ESXi Server!
Optionally, you can add a slim DVD reader just incase you need to reload ESXi when you\'re away from home.

Don\'t forget that most cases from the above website do NOT come with a PSU. You will have to add one.

Good luck mate.
